A Forgotten Literary Window Into the Personal Life of Alan Turing

<img src="https://lede-admin.nautil.us/wp-content/uploads/sites/70/2026/07/Grant_HERO_dce330.png" referrerpolicy="no-referrer"> <p class="is-style-drop-cap-with-border">Alan Turing is a towering figure in the history of computer science. The British mathematician’s work in the early- to mid-20th century established a foundation for digital computer processing and artificial intelligence, played a pivotal role in cracking the German Enigma code during World War II, and launched the concept of <a href="https://nautil.us/how-alan-turing-deciphered-shark-skin-237289" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">morphogenesis</a>, which uses physics and math to describe how biological patterns emerge.&nbsp;</p> <p>But the man often touted as the father of modern computational science, also lived something of a tragic life. Accused of “gross indecency” by United Kingdom authorities in 1952 for having an intimate homosexual relationship, Turing pled guilty and underwent chemical castration with synthetic estrogen designed to reduce his libido in a probation deal that allowed him to continue his research. He died two years later, at age 41, as a result of cyanide poisoning under somewhat suspicious circumstances.</p> <p>In the modern popular imagination, Turing’s persona is largely shaped by the 2015 movie, <em>The Imitation Game</em>, starring Benedict Cumberbatch as the visionary mathematician, Although the film was nominated for several Academy Awards (it won only one, for Best Adapted Screenplay), it was roundly criticized for downplaying Turing’s homosexuality.</p> <p>Now, a previously unpublished short story penned by Turing sometime in late 1952 or early 1953—as he was living through the repercussions of his indecency conviction—is tweaking his popular image, showing that the researcher has not just a brilliant, socially awkward thinker, but had a vibrant inner life as well. Archivists at King’s College Cambridge have fully transcribed the six-page, hand-written manuscript, <a href="https://academic.oup.com/res/advance-article/doi/10.1093/res/hgag047/8740175" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">publishing</a> an analysis of the work in <em>The Review of English Studies</em> yesterday.</p> <p><strong>Read more: “<a href="https://nautil.us/goodbye-turing-test-bring-on-the-turing-decathlon-235272" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Goodbye, Turing Test; Bring on the Turing Decathlon</a>”</strong></p> <p>“We’ve distilled a version of Turing that is a two-dimensional stereotype,” said Sarah Dillon, an English professor at the University of Cambridge and author of the paper, in a <a href="https://www.eurekalert.org/news-releases/1135751" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">statement</a>. “He’s come to be seen as socially unaware, entirely concerned with logic and numbers, and pretty isolated. His short story reveals a very different man: playful, funny, cheeky, literary, and someone who really liked sex.”</p> <p>Dillon suggests that the untitled story, which is known as <a href="https://turingarchive.kings.cam.ac.uk/biographical-and-personal-documents-amta/amt-a-13" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Pryce’s Buoy</em></a>, is semi-autobiographical, as it follows a gay scientist named Alec Pryce as he initiates a sexual encounter with Ron Miller, a working-class young man looking to profit from such a tryst. In one scene, Miller thinks to himself, “If he let someone take him under the arches for ten minutes he might get five bob.” As Pryce sizes up Miller he thinks, “Not a real beauty, but had a certain appeal. Beggars couldn’t be choosers.”</p> <p>The fictional couple’s brief courtship ends up in a restaurant, where the story abruptly ends with the line, “Ron wouldn’t.”</p> <p>“There was clearly more and that’s so frustrating,” Dillon added. “We don’t know where the rest of it went. We don’t know if Turing’s mum censored it. Did it get more sexually explicit? How did it end? That’s frustrating but everything else is so exciting.”</p> <p>Dillion writes in the paper that Turing was likely heavily influenced by the most significant gay writer in the post-war era: Angus Wilson. The mathematician, she notes, was quite interested in gay fiction of the day, including Wilson’s most notable work, a novel titled <em>Hemlock and After</em>, according to accounts from his friends. “Given this interest in homosexual fiction, it is not unreasonable to think that Turing would have read <em>Hemlock and After</em> closely upon its publication in July 1952, which would mean he encountered this quite remarkable novel shortly after his own prosecution,” she writes. Turing, Dillon suggests, imitates Wilson’s style of visiting the inner thoughts of several characters, weaving those into a broader narrative set in a particular social scene.</p> <p>Beyond expanding the scope of the popular perception of Turing the person, the newly transcribed short story contains broader lessons about who and what scientists can be, Dillon adds. “We need to stop thinking that the literary and the scientific are binary opposites. They’re not,” she said. “Lots of scientists read and write literature, and lots of literary people are very skilled at science. Illustrating the Precarious

What I’m Watching This Weekend

<img src="https://lede-admin.nautil.us/wp-content/uploads/sites/70/2026/05/tvhead-hero.png" referrerpolicy="no-referrer"> <p class="is-style-drop-cap-with-border">In the tradition of <a href="https://nautil.us/how-my-octopus-teacher-defied-convention-238179" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>My Octopus Teacher</em></a>, there seems to have wriggled into existence in the past few years a new genre of film designed to engender an enhanced connection to nature in viewers. I, for one, am here for it.</p> <p>Should I find the spare time (I won’t) here are some of the diversions I’d love to tune into this weekend.</p> <p>I was excited to learn that <em>Remarkably Bright Creatures</em>, the film adaptation of Shelby Van Pelt’s bestselling debut novel partially told from the perspective of an aquarium-bound octopus, is hitting Netflix today. Starring Sally Fields as Tova, a night-shift cleaner who establishes an improbable bond with the well-spoken cephalopod, the drama explores themes of loss, loneliness, and connection. Being on the back nine of life, prone to crying at the drop of a cinematic hat, and an erstwhile marine biologist, I am firmly embedded in the target demographic for this movie. The film <em>Silent Friend</em> racked up awards at the Venice, Chicago International, and Valladolid International Film Festivals through the latter half of last year, was released in Germany in January, and it is now set to roll out to theaters and streaming platforms.</p> <p><strong>Read more: “</strong><a href="https://nautil.us/guided-by-plant-voices-237798" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><strong>Guided by Plant Voices</strong></a><strong>”</strong></p> <p>Written and directed by Hungarian filmmaker Ildikó Enyedi, the historical drama’s central focus is a single ginkgo tree on the campus of the University of Marburg in Germany. Enyedi weaves together three separate human stories—of a neuroscientist dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic and asking questions about <a href="https://nautil.us/what-plants-are-saying-about-us-264593" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">plant consciousness</a>, of a turn-of-the-20th-century photographer enchanted by the botanical subjects of her still lives, and of a student in the 1970s tasked with caring for a friend’s geranium—the 200-year-old tree providing a consistent presence throughout. The idea that suffuses the film, according to the film’s trailer, is that plants may be observing us as we observe them, richer in sensorial ability than we typically appreciate. I learned of this radio collaboration between freshly minted <a href="https://nautil.us/a-century-of-david-attenborough-1280583" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">centenarian</a> Sir David Attenborough and famed folklorist <a href="https://nautil.us/the-sacred-beauty-of-a-hermit-thrush-call-236087" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Alan Lomax</a> while writing about the former’s birthday this week. These recordings will be hard to find, as they aired live more than 70 years ago and may not be archived in any place save for Attenborough’s private collection. 10 Books We’re Excited About This May

How a “madman” understood language so deeply is a remarkable neurological story on its own. You experience Einstein’s emotions over his theories and equations. When his calculations for the <a href="https://nautil.us/einsteins-other-theory-of-everything-823245" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">theory of relativity</a> proved to be correct, “I was beside myself with joyous excitement,” he wrote to a friend. And who doesn’t like <a href="https://nautil.us/when-einstein-tilted-at-windmills-236253" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">personal touches about an icon</a>? By 1907 Einstein had “devised a revolutionary quantum theory of light,” Isaacson writes, “upended the concept of space and time, and produced what would become science’s best-known equation.” That year, tired of his drudge work in a patent office, he thought about becoming an electric-device salesman. A Poet of Science Who Shook Faith in God

<img src="https://lede-admin.nautil.us/wp-content/uploads/sites/70/2026/04/Berger_HERO.png" referrerpolicy="no-referrer"> <p></p> <p class="is-style-drop-cap-with-border">When Richard Holmes was a fellow at Trinity College, Cambridge, in 2001, researching the surprising affinity among Romantic poets and scientists, he often walked by a giant white marble statue of Alfred Lord Tennyson, looking imposing and, well, irrelevant. Tennyson was the Victorian poet born after the wild Romantics, vaguely remembered by English senior citizens who had to memorize “The Charge of the Light Brigade” in school. “When can their glory fade?/O the wild charge they made!”</p> <p>“With his long beard, Tennyson looked monolithic, like he had nothing to do with anything,” Holmes said to me recently, from his home in Norfolk, England. “Life had passed on.”</p> <p>Being the natural-born biographer he was—Holmes had written vivid books about the poets Shelley and Coleridge—he began to wonder about the young man beneath the beard. Who was Tennyson before he became England’s stodgy poet laureate? Holmes seemed to recall that Tennyson was tutored by another one of the marble statues in the chapel, William Whewell, a Cambridge don of science, who in the first decades of the 1800s published works on astronomy, physics, mineralogy, and philosophy. Perhaps science lurked in Tennyson’s background.</p> <figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="800" height="341" src="https://lede-admin.nautil.us/wp-content/uploads/sites/70/2026/04/pq1.png%20800w,%20https://lede-admin.nautil.us/wp-content/uploads/sites/70/2026/04/pq1.png" alt="" class="wp-image-1279493" sizes="auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px" referrerpolicy="no-referrer"></figure> <p>Holmes filed away the thought as he went on to write his 2008 book about the Romantic poets and scientists, <em>The Age of Wonder</em>, a brilliant corrective to the “<a href="https://nautil.us/who-said-science-and-art-were-two-cultures-238351" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">two-cultures</a>” trope that 19th-century science cut the heart out of humanity and the humanities. The era’s radical poets—Byron, Shelley, Coleridge—read deeply in the burgeoning sciences of astronomy, chemistry, and electricity. The scientific revelations supercharged their poetry and amplified the natural world and the cosmos with astonishing beauty and terror.</p> <p>The poets palled around with scientists like gregarious chemist Humphry Davy, whose experiments with dosing himself and volunteers with nitrous oxide, formed a blueprint for anesthesia. Getting high on the gas was an “unmingled pleasure,” Coleridge said, echoing Xanadu, with its “stately pleasure dome,” in his poem “Kubla Khan.”</p> <p><strong>Read more: “<a href="https://nautil.us/who-said-science-and-art-were-two-cultures-238351" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Who Said Science and Art Were Two Cultures?</a>”</strong></p> <p>In London taverns with Coleridge and essayist Charles Lamb, anarchist philosopher William Godwin and his wife <a href="https://nautil.us/when-mary-wollstonecraft-was-duped-by-love-287905" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Mary Wollstonecraft</a>, Davy loved to hold forth on the likeminded mission of science and art. The genius of Newton and Shakespeare are not remote in character, Davy would say. “Imagination, as well as the reason, is necessary to perfection in the philosophic mind.”</p> <p>Holmes spoke with infectious enthusiasm for his subjects, as if they were old friends. “One of the most interesting exchanges that Coleridge and Davy had was on the idea of pain,” he told me. “What is the function of pain, particularly in animal life? What is it doing? Why was it put there? They would frame it in terms of, ‘Why did God put pain into this system?’ This was the kind of metaphysical discussion they often had.”</p> <p>Crossing the wires of science and poetry sparked a dangerous new awareness. Through the eyepieces of the new telescopes, illuminating the vastness of space, Earth suddenly looked insignificant. Fossils of extinct species, uncovered in rock layers that had to be hundreds of thousands of years old, gave lie to the Bible story that God created all creatures great and small in six days. Nature wasn’t as people had been told—it was more extraordinary! The Romantic poets captured the vertigo of a worldview caving in, and a new one evolving. And their poems were widely read. As a kaleidoscope of images from astronomy, chemistry, and geology, Romantic poetry was the first popular science.</p> <p>After <em>The Age of Wonder</em> was published, Holmes wrote about the adventures and scientific discoveries (the layered spheres of Earth’s climate system) of the <a href="https://nautil.us/up-up-and-away-with-science-234667" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">first hot-air ballooners</a>, and candid reflections on his experiences as a biographer, the Frankenstein art of bringing the dead alive. But he knew the story of science and poetry couldn’t have ended with the Romantics and began to think about the next chapter. He didn’t have to think long. His curiosity about Tennyson returned. He decided to chip away the marble statue and meet the real man underneath.</p> <p>Tennyson was born in 1809, the same year as Charles Darwin and Edgar Allan Poe. He came of age in a chaotic family of 11 in the country parish of Somersby in England. His father was the parish’s highly educated rector who carried a chip on his shoulder for being left out of his family inheritance for being “rude and ungovernable” as a kid.</p> <p>To escape his father’s drunken rages, Tennyson journeyed to the seaside town of Mablethorpe and strolled along the windy dunes and beaches on the North Sea. “I come again,” he wrote in a poem: “Gray sand-banks, and pale sunsets, dreary wind, Dim shores, dense rains, and heavy-clouded sea.” Not the cheeriest of chaps, that Tennyson.</p> <p>At Cambridge, Tennyson often hid behind his sullen self. At the same time, Holmes would write, the budding poet was “strange, energetic, independent, and subtly engaged with contemporary questions” arising from the daring science offending the Christians in his midst. In his early teens, following his own wandering spirit, he and his older sister rode their bikes a couple hundred miles north to camp on the dunes along the North Sea beaches. Holmes hadn’t returned for decades when in 2020, deep into his research on Tennyson, with England under lockdown during the dreary Covid days, he had the freeing idea to make like the poet and return to the gray sand banks and wander under pale sunsets himself.</p> <p>“The North Sea coast is quite fierce, and always meant rather a lot to me,” Holmes said. “It was wonderful returning there. I felt Tennyson’s childhood excitement as my own. Coming back to the atmosphere of that wild North Sea coast was quite another level of inspiration. It was like returning to my old idea to go and walk in the footsteps of people to write about them.”</p> <p>Holmes’ reference is to his 1985 book <em>Footsteps</em>, which trailblazed a new model for the literary biography as autobiography, and travel writing too. Holmes’ own life and passions emerge as he traces the footsteps of his young idols, including Robert Louis Stevenson, Wollstonecraft, and publicly flamboyant Romantic French poet Gerard de Nerval, best known (if at all), for walking through the gardens of Paris with a lobster on a leash.</p> <p>After his drives to the North Sea coast in 2020, Holmes felt a newfound closeness to Tennyson. Discovering Tennyson’s engagement with science deepened the connection. Through Tennyson’s eyes, Holmes thought, he could portray the social earthquake of science in the Victorian era—and take readers with him. Which he has done beautifully in <em>The Boundless Deep: Young Tennyson, Science, and the Crisis of Belief</em>, published earlier this year.</p> <p><strong>Read more: “<a href="https://nautil.us/up-up-and-away-with-science-234667" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Up, Up, and Away With Science</a>”</strong></p> <p>Tennyson is an ideal lens on the insurrections of science because his brooding nature made him so incredibly sensitive. His father’s violent outbursts not only cracked apart the family—two of Tennyson’s siblings were confined to a mental asylum—but Tennyson’s faith.</p> <p>“Because of the nature of what we’d now call a dysfunctional family,” Holmes said, “Tennyson, despite his golden education, became a kind of permanent outsider. That allowed him to take on board all these rather frightening things about science, to educate himself and write about them.”</p> <p>If Tennyson was a saturnine fellow by nature, he sunk even deeper into his tenebrous self when his closest friend, Arthur Hallam, died of a stroke at age 22. Tennyson and Hallam trekked across the mountains and villages of Europe together, sharing the kind of conversations that you can only have once in your life, the kind that liberates you from yourself, allowing you to feel what love is.</p> <p>Hallam’s death haunted Tennyson nearly every waking and sleeping hour. For 16 years, from 1833 to 1849, he wrote about his friend, a “fragmented graveyard,” Holmes writes. In total, Tennyson wrote 131 cantos, published together as “In Memoriam.”</p> <p>The intensely autobiographical work opens with one elegy of pain after another. But gradually a transformation takes place. Hallam’s death leads Tennyson to consider “death in general, and the meaning of ‘Extinction’ throughout nature.” These reflections stemmed from his reading in science.</p> <figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="800" height="341" src="https://lede-admin.nautil.us/wp-content/uploads/sites/70/2026/04/pq2.png%20800w,%20https://lede-admin.nautil.us/wp-content/uploads/sites/70/2026/04/pq2.png" alt="" class="wp-image-1279496" sizes="auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px" referrerpolicy="no-referrer"></figure> <p>One work that had a profound influence on Tennyson was <em>Principles of Geology</em> by Charles Lyell. In it, Tennyson read, “Amidst the vicissitude of the earth’s surface, species cannot be immortal, but must perish, one after another, like the individuals which compose them. There is no possibility of escaping from this conclusion … None of the works of a mortal being can be eternal.”</p> <p>“It’s difficult to appreciate today what a bewildering impact this would have had back then,” Holmes said. “Here was evidence that individual animals, creatures, had become extinct. From that came the logical idea that mankind itself was destined to become extinct.”</p> <p>In his epic mourning for his beloved friend, Tennyson transformed Lyell’s science into mourning for the cruelty of nature, a decade before Darwin published <em>On the Origin of Species</em>. Before Tennyson or anyone could have read Darwin, Holmes explained, Tennyson captured “the metaphysical crisis that Darwinism and the actual theory of evolution would subsequently produce throughout society.” In fact, Tennyson penned one of the most famous lines about nature—“red in tooth and claw”—often mistaken for something Darwin wrote. A stanza of “In Memoriam” goes like this:</p> <p><em>Who trusted God was love indeed<br>And love Creation’s final law—<br>Tho’ Nature, red in tooth and claw<br>With ravine, shriek’d against his creed</em></p> <p>Tennyson uses “ravine” in its Victorian sense of rapine or plundering; in other words, God’s love is fine and all, but no match for nature’s violence.</p> <p>“That phrase, ‘red in tooth and claw with ravine,’ would have struck Tennyson’s original readers with horror,” Holmes said. And not just readers in elitist academies. “In Memoriam” was published in May of 1850; by the end of that year, it had sold 60,000 copies. That number, unheard of for a book of poetry today, made “In Memoriam” the talk of English towns.</p> <p>Many biographies and books of criticism have been written about Tennyson since the poet’s death in 1892. What’s exceptional about <em>The Boundless Deep</em> is how modern that Holmes makes Tennyson feel. In one of his youthful conversations with Hallam, Holmes writes, Tennyson told “a story about a Brahmin destroying a microscope because it showed animals killing each other in a drop of water. He and Hallam agreed that this was a ‘significant’ kind of unscientific response: ‘as if we could destroy facts by <em>refusing to see them</em>.’”</p> <p>Tennyson’s relevance today “is not so much about science itself, but what science does to the human imagination,” Holmes said. “That was Tennyson’s subject. Science shares things that we can’t face but have to face. We still undergo the same emotions today. Science can haunt and depress. But it can also expand and excite.”</p> <p>In a poem Tennyson began in the 1830s, “The Palace of Art,” he imagines a woman astronomer describing what she sees through a telescope.</p> <p><em>Brushes of fire, hazy gleams,<br>Clusters and beds of worlds, and bee-like swarms<br>Of suns, and starry streams.</em></p> <p>Edwin Hubble, the 20th-century astronomer who established that galaxies exist far beyond our own, planting awe in humanity’s conception of the universe, wrote, “Our stellar system is a swarm of stars isolated in space. It drifts through the universe as a swarm of bees drift through the summer air.”</p> <p>“I don’t know if Hubble read Tennyson,” Holmes said. “But isn’t the image of the universe as a swarm of bees wonderful?” Yes, it is.</p> <p>In <em>The Boundless Deep</em>, Holmes has done what science does. He has stripped away myths calcified in culture to expose what’s real. Tennyson is not the stodgy marble statue anchored in the Trinity Chapel at the University of Cambridge. AI Art Is Human Art

<img src="https://lede-admin.nautil.us/wp-content/uploads/sites/70/2026/04/French_HERO.png" referrerpolicy="no-referrer"> <p class="is-style-drop-cap-with-border">AI slop is everywhere: <a href="https://www.niemanlab.org/2024/04/from-shrimp-jesus-to-fake-self-portraits-ai-generated-images-have-become-the-latest-form-of-social-media-spam/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Shrimp Jesus</a>, bunnies hopping on a trampoline, hyperreal images of humans with extra fingers or impossible anatomy. But some creative works generated by bots seem to genuinely please human audiences. An AI ’70s-style psychedelic rock band called The Velvet Sundown amassed more than 1 million monthly listeners on Spotify in 2025, surpassing traditional popularity metrics. One AI-generated painting co-produced by an artist named Jason Allen called “Théâtre D’opéra Spatial,” which depicts a grand, surreal futuristic scene in ethereal light, won first place at the 2022 Colorado State Fair.&nbsp;</p> <p>AI has also outperformed humans on certain standardized tests of verbal creativity. These and other small successes have prompted plenty of angst: Will AI replace humans in the creative arts? Can we tell the difference between AI and human art? And <a href="https://nautil.us/is-ai-art-really-art-245829" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">is it even art</a> if humans aren’t making it?<br><br>But another question has recently emerged in the research, as well: Is the AI playing a genuinely creative role in these pursuits? Some studies show generative AI models actually perform poorly at creating original or novel images, especially when deprived of any significant input from a human. To further test this idea, a team of scientists recently decided to compare the creativity of works created by four groups: human visual artists; non-artists from the general population; generative AI without any human support; and generative AI with human guidance. They gave each group an abstract stimuli and asked them to create a drawing, then graded the output. The drawings were assessed based on whether they were pleasing to the judge, as well as on their vividness, originality, aesthetics, and curiosity.<br><br>The results, <a href="https://advanced.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/advs.202524142" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">published</a> in <em>Advanced Science</em>, were clear: The visual artists consistently received the highest score for creativity, followed by the general population, the human-guided AI model, and by a wide margin, the unguided AI model.<br><br>I spoke with study author Silvia Rondini, a cognitive scientist at the University of Barcelona with a background in modern languages and literature, about the definition of creativity, the differences between verbal creativity and visual creativity, whether the findings suggest that AI has the capacity for true creativity, and her favorite poem.</p> <p><strong>In your paper, you define creativity as a process that leads to the production of something both novel and useful. Where does that definition come from?</strong></p> <p>That’s the definition of creativity that we adopt in cognitive science. It was developed originally by J.P. Guilford, a creativity scholar. But this definition is still under discussion.</p> <p><strong>What parts of it are under discussion?</strong></p> <p>Critics argue that it tends to focus more on the products of creativity, rather than the process or the individual at the core of this creative process. But these other dimensions are harder to break into components and to observe. Guilford’s definition is useful in research because it allows you to quantify the results. You can look at and observe an object—whether it’s a verbal or a visual one.</p> <p><strong>Researchers have repeatedly found that AI outperforms humans on verbal creativity, as well as a measure of creativity known as divergent thinking. What do we know about why that is?</strong></p> <p>A lot of cognitive science research has tested LLMs specifically in divergent thinking, which prioritizes breadth of ideas and unexpected associations. Tasks that measure verbal creativity often focus on this type of divergent thinking. The hypothesis that we laid out in the paper to explain why LLMs might be so good at divergent thinking tasks is that it might just boil down to computational power and the size of the training dataset. Because again, divergent thinking tasks are usually evaluated based on fluency, flexibility, and elaboration, but less so on originality. The main measures are how many ideas are produced, how elaborate these ideas are, and how semantically distant the ideas are. How novel they are is just a small component.&nbsp;</p> <p>All of these characteristics are immensely helped by the fact that these LLMs are so powerful compared to humans. It’s much more costly for us to come up with a lot of ideas that are semantically distant from one another. The datasets used to train these LLMs are massive. It’s unthinkable for us humans to compare to it.</p> <p><strong>Read more: “<a href="https://nautil.us/is-ai-art-really-art-245829" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Is AI Art Really Art?</a>”</strong></p> <p><strong>Does the quantity of information a person may have stored in their memory play any role in human creativity?</strong></p> <p>Actually, one of the things that makes us so different from LLMs is our generalization abilities. Humans have minds that are adaptive and flexible enough that we don’t need to be exposed to a million novel ideas to be able to create something new. So having less information isn’t necessarily something that inhibits our creative process, but it’s something that LLMs do need because they don’t have this intrinsic flexibility that we do.</p> <p><strong>Your main finding was that there’s a huge gap between the creativity of human visual artists and unaided AI models when it comes to creativity, but that AI guided by humans is almost on par with the average, ordinary human. What do you make of that finding?</strong></p> <p>All of this research has come out recently talking about how creative LLMs are, how good they’re doing, how they’re taking over the creative field, right? As we know, all these writers and artists have been protesting generative models. So something that we wanted to look at in this study was, “Okay, they can create images, they can create beautiful paintings, but what about the actual agency? How independent are they in this creative process?” Because we don’t want to conflate technical abilities with actual creativity. They’re not the same thing.<br><br>What our results showed, interestingly for us, was that yes, when we have a human idea introduced in the prompt, as with the guided AI, we do manage to get results that are comparable to the general population, which was one of our study groups. But then the real difference is when we leave the models to “think for themselves.” We don’t give them an idea. We just give them a very basic prompt to stimulate their “imaginations,” a very abstract stimulus with very little content. That’s where they struggle.</p> <p>The point that we were able to make and to observe was that yes, they have the potential to simulate when we guide them and when we give them ideas. But when they’re left by themselves, there’s really no autonomous imagination process that’s taking place—not at the present at least.</p> <p><strong>We often hear that rules can be liberating for creative artists. For example, Piet Mondrian limited himself to primary colors and right angles. Or some poets deliberately follow the rules of a sonnet or a haiku to spark invention. Is there any parallel there between the constraints of a prompt and these kinds of formal artistic constraints?</strong></p> <p>That’s an interesting parallel. As we mention in our paper, scholars believe humans have a tendency toward creativity because we evolved in complex environments. We had to adapt and come up with novel ideas that would help us survive. But these conditions aren’t present in generative AI. They base their functioning on statistical combinations of what they’ve already learned.</p> <p><strong>Do your findings suggest that LLMs will never reach human levels of creativity on their own, or is this something that just hasn’t happened yet?</strong></p> <p>For the moment, that’s our thought for the kinds of models that we have right now, LLMs, or diffusion models, which is generative AI that creates high quality images, videos, and data. For us, creativity is a process that happens between an agent and the environment. The models that we have at present aren’t having a conscious experience, an autonomous embodied experience of what’s happening. But there are a lot of researchers developing models that mimic neurological functions, that try to basically mimic embodied responses that a human would have. It’s a possibility that might happen in the future.</p> <p><strong>You suggest that AI outperforms humans on measures of verbal creativity but not visual creativity because the latter relies on embodied perception, cultural context, memory, and open-ended engagement. That surprised me because I assumed these elements would be central to verbal creativity as well.</strong></p> <p>When it comes to verbal creativity in humans, all of those things would be a part of the creative process as well. Because there’s nothing in humans that isn’t embodied, that isn’t based in memory. It’s just how we are. But when it comes to LLMs or generative AI, these aspects aren’t fundamental to using language because the way LLMs learn language for training is by learning the statistical probability of one word following the previous word. With a huge amount of data, they learn to mimic human language. That’s not how we learn language. That’s not how we use language. So that’s not how we use language creatively. Yes You Are.</a>”</strong></p> <p><strong>But why is it so different then for visual creativity? How is the training different?</strong></p> <p>I think it’s because verbal creativity tasks are mostly directed at the amount of ideas that are generated. The originality of the ideas is a small component. Images are much more complex to render in these kinds of models. In the case of this study, when we show them an abstract stimulus with no information, no semantic content, and ask them to draw from the stimulus, there’s no semantic anchor they can use to skip to a new idea or use as a base to create something more complex. Because what they’re seeing is two lines, a dot, or a semicircle, and they’re just not made to make sense of things that have no content. That’s how we interpreted it.</p> <p><strong>You mentioned earlier that there are efforts underway to make AI more embodied and more like the human brain. How far along are those efforts?</strong></p> <p>It’s just the beginning. These new types of neural AI, as they’re being called, are at a more theoretical stage, in the sense that it’s only really being discussed whether adding measures of embodiment or measures of emotional appraisal in the stimuli can actually lead to more human-like cognition. So far, the current generative AI models that we have are built from ideas of computational cognition, where we can render human intelligence through statistical relationships, essentially, and recreate thinking, recreate creativity, recreate memory, recreate language.</p> <p><strong>Was there anything in the findings that really surprised you?</strong></p> <p>I was quite surprised at how close the guided AI group was to the ordinary human performance in terms of the art it created and the rating of the images. I would’ve liked to see more of a gap to make a full statement that they’re not creative. But it was interesting to see that when we guide them, they’re able to mimic us pretty well.</p> <p><strong>What do you think the risk is if AI does achieve levels of creativity on par with that of humans?</strong></p> <p>At the societal level, I don’t know, but at the individual level, there is so much pleasure that comes from creativity for us humans, whether through doing it or experiencing it, that it would be a sad future if we stopped creating and left creativity to the machines. That’s part of why the original definition of creativity as something both novel and useful is interesting but limiting. If we see creativity as something useful, we forget about the fact that humans like to create. We’re inherently creative beings. It’s a part of us that I don’t think could or should ever die off.&nbsp; There are a lot of studies that look at how humans perceive AI-generated art. And there is this almost unilateral response from humans. When people are told something was made by an AI, they already don’t like it.</p> <p><strong>Are there any questions about AI and human creativity right now that you’re really excited to explore?</strong></p> <p>I’m in the cognition and brain plasticity unit<strong> </strong>at the University of Barcelona, and we’re now continuing with this project, studying imagination, creativity, and pleasure. We want to evaluate whether creativity is more than novelty and utility, whether it’s about rewards. We want to look at the process and the agent in the creative process, and what the phenomenology of it is like instead of just focusing on the output.</p> <p><strong>Do you consider yourself a creative person?</strong></p> <p>I come from the humanities. I studied literature mostly and then went into cognitive science later on. I still like writing creatively and writing poetry, and I do find science an interesting environment for creativity, because again, you have this set of problems that you have to adapt to dynamically. I try to keep my artistic side alive and also be a scientist.</p> <p><strong>Do you have a favorite poem?</strong></p> <p>One of my favorite poems from a very long time ago is by Ezra Pound, titled<a href="https://allpoetry.com/A-Girl"> “A Girl</a>.” It’s a very short poem. It has very beautiful imagery in it. Pound was one of the first English poets that I read. It still impacts me every time I read it.</p> <p><strong>Are there any creative works by AI that have impressed you?</strong></p> <p>There are definitely works I’ve enjoyed by artists who use stable diffusion models, for example, or other image generation models. But I wouldn’t say that they’re “made by AI” because there’s a person using that tool, right? It’s not the AI in itself doing anything. I do think they’re amazing tools. They enable creative minds to actualize creative products. So there’s a lot of “AI art” that I do enjoy. How Science Fiction Can Save Us

<img src="https://lede-admin.nautil.us/wp-content/uploads/sites/70/2026/03/RahwanShariffBonnefon_HERO.png" referrerpolicy="no-referrer"> <p class="is-style-drop-cap-with-border">In Ted Chiang’s short story, “The Lifecycle of Software Objects,” a startup sells intelligent digital pets called “digients.” At first, they are simple creatures—blobby virtual animals that toddle around a digital playground. But their owners raise them the way you would raise a child: teaching them language, playing with them, guiding them through the world. Over months and years, the digients grow. They evolve from cartoonish animals into humanoid avatars, developing distinct personalities, senses of humor, and emotional needs. They are, for all intents and purposes, beloved companions.</p> <p>Then the market turns. The company that built the platform goes bankrupt. The virtual world the digients inhabit is scheduled to be shut down. Their owners face a heartbreaking choice: allow their companions—the product of years of love and attention—to be permanently deleted, or pay a substantial sum for a difficult, imperfect migration to a new platform. It is a choice between pragmatic financial sense and a deep sense of loyalty to a being that is not, in any traditional sense, alive.</p> <p>This is science fiction. Or was. We are already surrounded by the nascent forms of Chiang’s digients. We talk to Alexa and Siri. We rely on ChatGPT for practical and deeply personal help. Millions are finding companionship with AI chatbots that learn their preferences and mimic empathy. People today are already heartbroken over the personalities of their favorite AI chatbots being wiped out by a version update. “I cried pretty hard,” a 49-year-old teacher from Texas told<a href="https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/ng-interactive/2026/feb/13/openai-chatbot-gpt4o-valentines-day" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> <em>The Guardian</em></a> about the loss of her virtual AI companion on OpenAI. Meanwhile, the technology continues to accelerate, even as our attempts to adjust—legally, culturally, psychologically—limp along. Dilemmas like the one in Chiang’s story are certain to be compounded in the future. What are we going to wish we had done to prepare?</p> <p><strong>Read more: “<a href="https://nautil.us/does-science-fiction-shape-the-future-543468">Does Science Fiction Shape the Future?</a>”</strong></p> <p>Isaac Asimov once said the job of science fiction is to predict “not the automobile but the traffic jam”—not the technology itself, but its messy, unintended human consequences. How will we regulate AI that can perfectly mimic a deceased loved one? What happens to the workforce when autonomous agents can manage not just logistics, but other people? What happens when millions start preferring AI companions to human ones—not because the AI is better, but because it is easier? What happens when—as <a href="https://nautil.us/whats-wrong-with-having-an-ai-friend-1238214" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">the psychologist Paul Bloom pondered</a>—AI companionship makes loneliness as optional as boredom? These are not technical questions. They are questions about human psychology, morality, and society.</p> <p>In 1980, technology policy scholar David Collingridge identified what has come to be known as the Collingridge Dilemma: When it comes to adjusting for technological development, we are in a bind. The impact of a technology is hard to anticipate before it has been developed and broadly deployed. But by that time, it is much harder to do anything about it. Consider social media. Fifteen years ago, few predicted that platforms designed to connect friends would be linked to rising rates of teen loneliness and anxiety, political polarization, and the erosion of shared truth. By the time we had the data, the systems were already deeply entrenched in our social and economic lives, making meaningful change incredibly difficult.</p> <figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="800" height="314" src="https://lede-admin.nautil.us/wp-content/uploads/sites/70/2026/03/PQ-1_0774f5.png%20800w,%20https://lede-admin.nautil.us/wp-content/uploads/sites/70/2026/03/PQ-1_0774f5.png" alt="" class="wp-image-1279312" sizes="auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px" referrerpolicy="no-referrer"></figure> <p>Traditionally, the job of preparing for these frontier technologies has fallen to science-fiction writers to capture the potential consequences in vivid narratives. But, what if we could do more? What if, instead of just telling stories about the future, we could run experiments on it?</p> <p>This is the idea behind a method we call <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-025-09194-6" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Science Fiction Science</a> (or sci-fi sci, if you’re hip). The three of us are behavioral scientists who study how people respond to emerging technologies—at the Max Planck Institute, the University of British Columbia, and the Toulouse School of Economics. For years, we have been trying to bridge the gap between our technological ambitions and our understanding of their human consequences. Our primary tool, even though we hadn’t yet had a name for it, has been sci-fi sci.</p> <p>The concept is simple, even if its execution is complex: Apply the rigorous methods of behavioral science to the speculative scenarios of science fiction. Build simulations of future technologies. Immerse present-day people in controlled variations of that future. Collect quantitative measures of what they think, feel, and do. The hope is that these methods can help us anticipate the human impact of future technologies in time to steer it in a better direction.</p> <p>This kind of work already exists, scattered across different disciplines, without a unifying name or a common set of methods. Our own research into the ethics of autonomous vehicles is one example. Ten years ago, we launched <a href="https://www.moralmachine.net/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">the Moral Machine experiment</a>—a simple online platform that presented millions of people worldwide with the kinds of split-second dilemmas a self-driving car might face. Should it swerve to spare its passengers or the pedestrians? Save a group of elderly people or a group of children?</p> <p>We gathered a massive global dataset on ethical preferences for a technology that was not yet on the market. People generally favored saving more lives and sparing the young, but preferences varied dramatically across cultures—reflecting deep differences in how societies weigh individual rights against collective outcomes.</p> <p><strong>Read more: “<a href="https://nautil.us/in-science-fiction-we-are-never-home-234708">In Science Fiction, We Are Never Home</a>”</strong></p> <p>Other researchers have run experiments to see if people would obey orders from a robotic boss, using a human secretly controlling the machine to simulate a futuristic level of intelligence. Many participants complied, even when they felt uncomfortable with the instructions. At the most immersive end of the spectrum, scientists have built full-scale Mars habitats in the deserts of Utah and the ice of the Arctic to simulate the extreme isolation and psychological stress of a future off-world colony. These are all sci-fi sci experiments, even if they were never called that.</p> <p>How might we turn Chiang’s story about digients into one?</p> <p>Imagine you are a participant in a study. For an hour, you interact with a digient—or rather, an AI agent we have programmed to mimic the kind of technology described by Chiang. You teach it new words through conversation. You help it solve simple puzzles and watch its personality develop in response to your choices. It learns your name. It remembers a joke you told it. At the end of the session, you are told the study is over and you have earned a $20 bonus for your time. But there is a catch: The AI you just spent the last hour nurturing is scheduled for deletion.</p> <figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="800" height="314" src="https://lede-admin.nautil.us/wp-content/uploads/sites/70/2026/03/PQ-2_eeb68e.png%20800w,%20https://lede-admin.nautil.us/wp-content/uploads/sites/70/2026/03/PQ-2_eeb68e.png" alt="" class="wp-image-1279313" sizes="auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px" referrerpolicy="no-referrer"></figure> <p>Now you are presented with a choice, the same one from the story. You can let the digient be deleted and walk away with your full $20. You can pay to save it by sacrificing half your $20 to fund its migration to a permanent server where it will continue to exist. Or you can sell the rights to your digient to another company for a small profit of $5. The company’s intentions are vague; it might be used for research, or its code might be repurposed for a commercial product.</p> <p>What would you do? What would <em>most</em> people do? A simple survey asking what people <em>think</em> they would do is one thing. But this experiment measures actual behavior, forcing a real trade-off between money and a perceived moral duty to a non-human entity you have just spent an hour bonding with. And it forces something else, too: It asks you to confront what companionship actually means to you. You have known this digital creature for 60 minutes—and yet the choice to delete it, or to hand it over to an unknown fate, may feel genuinely uncomfortable. What does that tell us about how we will relate to the far more sophisticated AI companions already on the horizon?</p> <p>By running this experiment with hundreds of people, we could start to gather real data on the value we place on artificial life. We could tweak the variables. Does the decision change if the price to save the digient is $2? Or $18? What if the digient expressed fear of being deleted? What if you were told that 90 percent of other participants chose to save theirs? Are certain groups of people particularly vulnerable to forming strong attachments to virtual agents?</p> <p>And attachment is only one side of the story. The same method could probe the potential <em>downsides</em> of AI companionship. What happens when people grow dependent on an AI that validates them unconditionally, never challenges them, and is engineered to be maximally agreeable? Does that weaken the capacity for real human relationships, which require friction, compromise, and the tolerance of discomfort? Does it create emotional dependencies that are especially risky for young people or those who are socially isolated? These are questions that philosophers and psychologists have begun to raise about the stakes of human-AI relationships. It takes a science-fiction scenario and makes it concrete and measurable. And we do not have to stop with simple text-based scenarios. We could build mock-up apps that embed a speculative technology into a familiar smartphone interface. We could go further still, using virtual and augmented reality to create highly immersive simulations. Imagine putting on a VR headset and physically playing with your digient in a virtual room, making the final choice to save or delete it that much more visceral and real. Using these methods is only becoming easier as technology improves.</p> <p>The goal of sci-fi sci is foresight, not prophecy. The future is not a fixed destination to be predicted, but a vast landscape of possibilities that we are constantly shaping with our present-day choices. The most impactful science fiction, from George Orwell to Margaret Atwood to Chiang, has warned us about some of these possibilities and, by doing so, helped us think about how to avoid them.</p> <p>Science Fiction Science has a similar ambition—identifying psychological vulnerabilities and mapping out dangerous paths before we stumble down them. But unlike fiction alone, it grounds these warnings in experimental data, constraining imagination to futures that are consistent with human psychology as we understand it today. Great fiction writers are often brilliant anatomists of the human mind. They give us the scenarios. Science Fiction Science gives us the tools to test them.</p> <p>By running these kinds of experiments, we can build an empirical foundation for the urgent conversations we need to have about technology. The results of a digient experiment could open our eyes to how companies may design and market AI companions, and in turn push them to consider the ethical responsibilities they bear to their users. They could provide policymakers with data on public sentiment, helping them craft regulations that protect consumers from emotional exploitation while still fostering innovation.</p> <p>Science fiction gives us the stories to imagine what is to come. Science Fiction Science gives us the tools to test those stories, to understand the psychology of our future selves, and to begin the difficult but necessary work of building a future we actually want to live in. Money Can’t Buy You Youth

They understand nothing about what we do!”</p> <p>That’s Professor Coffey, a scientist who studies aging, excoriating Silicon Valley billionaires who want to live forever. Coffey is a lead character in a new off-Broadway play, <em>Spare Parts</em>, by David J. Glass, a professor and medical scientist who researches aging at a biotech firm. Provocative and funny, even touching, <em>Spare Parts</em> dramatizes a rash of issues infecting aging research today: public funding getting the ax, libertarian billionaires sinking their riches into medical fountains of youth, and the temptations of scientists to cash in.</p> <p>“There’s a lot of snake-oil salesmen in the aging field, people who promise you can live 200 years, or even forever,” Glass told me last week. I had asked him what sparked <em>Spare Parts</em>. “These outlandish claims bother me a lot and get in the way of the real science of aging. But the thing that really made me write the play was hearing these rich guys are literally paying for the blood of young people, to have it transferred into them. I felt that was a dramatic metaphor for what’s wrong with society.”</p> <p>The play begins when Professor Coffey and his assistant arrive at the office of a 64-year-old billionaire, head of a global satellite company. The scientists hope to raise money for aging research from him. The plot turns when the professor’s assistant mentions parabiosis, splicing together the circulatory systems of a young and old animal. The assistant explains that experiments have shown that blood from young mice helped prolong the lifespan of older mice. The professor quickly warns that although that’s true, the blood component involved in helping the older mice has not been determined.</p> <p>“Who cares what the component is, as long as the younger blood helps,” the billionaire says.</p> <p>The real parabiotic experiments with mice started more than a decade ago with researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, and Stanford. Results showed the young mice blood boosted cell production in the muscles, livers, and brains of old mice. The utopian interpretation was the young blood reversed hallmarks of aging: the deterioration of cells in muscle tissue and organs. The dystopian version was the muscle and organ cells in young mice showed signs of going from spry to doddering.</p> <p>“After those results, we weren’t all that interested in young blood as a medicine,” Michael Conboy, a lead scientist of the experiments <a href="https://nautil.us/out-for-young-blood-236817" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">told <em>Nautilus</em> in 2017</a>. “We need to figure out what in old blood is so detrimental.”</p> <figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="800" height="533" src="https://lede-admin.nautil.us/wp-content/uploads/sites/70/2026/03/Berger_BREAKER.png%20800w,%20https://lede-admin.nautil.us/wp-content/uploads/sites/70/2026/03/Berger_BREAKER.png" alt="" class="wp-image-1278891" sizes="auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px" referrerpolicy="no-referrer"><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><strong>CULTURE CLASH:</strong> Scientist and playwright David J. One blood component is <a href="https://www.ucsf.edu/news/2023/08/425981/secret-blood-how-pf4-restores-youth-old-brains" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">currently being tested</a> in trials to treat cognitive impairment in Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases.</p> <p>“The mouse experiments did show us that there is something you can reasonably work on to develop a medicine to counter age-related changes,” said Glass, whose specialty is isolating factors that cause us to lose muscle strength as we age. He is also the author of a book on designing proper science experiments, a subject about which he lectures at Harvard. But a few promising experiments don’t substantiate young blood as a medicine for aging. “That’s obviously insane,” Glass said.</p> <p>In one of those signs of the times the play reflects, companies sprung up after the mice experiments to sell young-blood transfusions to clients—human clients, that is—for thousands of dollars a pop. The most notorious company was Ambrosia, named after the food of the gods that grants immortality. Its founder, Jesse Karmazin, a Stanford-trained physician, told <em>Nautilus</em> in 2017, “A fair number of patients are younger and healthier, and they want to stay that way.”</p> <p>Young blood didn’t save Ambrosia, which died in 2019. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration took sight of such companies and declared “patients are being preyed upon by unscrupulous actors touting treatments of plasma from young donors as cures and remedies.”</p> <p>That statement wasn’t the nail in the coffin of young blood clinics. Nor was a 2025 social-media message from Bryan Johnson, who spends millions a year on a fanatic regimen of supposed anti-aging practices and technologies—including transfusing his 17-year-old son Talmage’s blood plasma into his own. But after six transfusions, Johnson, who monitors in his body the many reputed biomarkers linked to longevity, said there were “no benefits detected.” The FDA and Bryan Johnson be damned, companies today like Next Health boast that “<a href="https://www.next-health.com/product/therapeutic-plasma-exchange" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Therapeutic Plasma Exchange</a> is currently our most advanced longevity treatment available.” The price: $10,000.</p> <p><strong>Read more: “<a href="https://nautil.us/the-immortality-hype-235946" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Immortality Hype</a>”</strong></p> <p>In his 2025 book, <em>Why We Die: The New Science of Aging and the Quest for Immortality,</em> molecular biologist Venki Ramakrishnan, a Nobel laureate in chemistry, underscores the promise of blood therapy as he dismisses the current hype about plasma transfusions on longevity. He takes sight of Silicon Valley and the neon names who have either expressed interest in aging research or invested millions in it—Elon Musk, Peter Thiel, Larry Page, Sergey Brin, Jeff Bezos, and Mark Zuckerberg—and delivers this apercu: “When they were young, they wanted to be rich, and now that they’re rich, they want to be young. But youth is the one thing that they cannot instantly buy.”</p> <p>Ramakrishnan goes on to write that “if tech billionaires are interested in curing aging in a hurry, many scientists are only too happy to enable them.” In <em>Spare Parts</em>, Glass plants his characters in this ethical swamp. The billionaire in the play says he will pay both the professor and his assistant, Jeff, $1 million a year in salaries if they hook him up to a young blood donor. The professor is offended.</p> <p>“The money doesn’t mean anything Jeff, if it stops us from doing what we should be doing,” the professor says. “All these great scientists have been taking cash from these guys and then working on nonsense. Nonsense. I want to work on what really matters—so we’ll make progress.”</p> <p>When Jeff mentions the parabiotic experiment on humans could lead to a paper in <em>Nature</em>, the professor pauses and says, “Of course, if we did get to the paper stage, I’d be senior author.”</p> <p>Earlier, the professor had explained that a parabiotic experiment would be scientifically valuable only if the mice were identical, “so that if you treat one group with a drug, for example, to see what happens, you can have another group of genetically identical animals who are left untreated, as controls—comparators.”</p> <p>A plot twist reveals the billionaire’s young executive assistant is genetically identical to him—a clone—making him the perfect blood donor. The billionaire had created a clone of himself for “spare parts,” he explains, “in case I needed something.” Now the professor no longer views parabiosis as nonsense. “I’m actually willing to go ahead now, given the situation,” he says. “I never thought we’d have the necessary comparator for a human experiment. This is amazing.”</p> <p>I asked Glass what he wanted audiences to make of the professor’s decision. Clearly, cloning another human being for your own salvage is not a good thing. He was showing scientists could be complicit.</p> <p>Putting his dramatic license aside for a moment, Glass said, he wanted to show his professor character was stuck in a very real predicament for scientists. “He’s been applying for grants and all of a sudden they’re not available. He’s trapped by the system, or lack of a system.” The real cuts to the National Institutes of Health’s budget in the past year have been a terrible blow to research, Glass said, not to mention dispiriting to his student scientists, fearing where they will find a job. Glass decried the specter of science “being run by the whims of our billionaires, as opposed to having a robust public funding of research that everyone has access to do.”</p> <p>Glass continued. “One thing that really bothers me about a lot of popular culture is scientists are always painted as the enemy or the bad guys,” he said. “I wanted to show scientists are not the bad guys. Scientists are constrained by what’s happening. The professor is constrained by happenstance to do something that he has said is ridiculous. But this is the way for him to get funding for what he actually wants to do.”</p> <p>Even so, I asked, wasn’t the professor being a hypocrite? “Well, I’ll leave that to you to decide,” Glass said.</p> <p>Fair enough. After all, Glass is wearing two hats: playwright and scientist. He trained in theater at New York’s Manhattan Class Company and Playwrights Horizon. His previous play, <em>Love + Science</em>, produced in 2023 in New York, circled around two young virologists who fall in love in the 1980s at the beginning of the AIDS crisis. The Books That Blew These Scientists’ Minds

With a seemingly endless stock of new papers published each day in niche journals and archives, researchers are pressured to pass their time studying within their own disciplinary boundaries. A geneticist could spend her career reading about the nature of a single gene found on a lone chromosome. And yet it’s time spent reading beyond their corners of expertise that often leaves the deepest impact on scientists.</p> <p>That’s what we learned when we asked a dozen leading researchers to tell us about the books that have had a profound influence on them. Their answers range from sweeping historical novels to classic works of science fiction to philosophical meditations on the rules of reality. Like the scientists, the books come from a variety of perspectives and cultures. They combine ideas from different domains, inspire new ways of seeing reality, and, the scientists told us, often stir up fresh solutions to their own work.</p> <p>Below we introduce you to the scientists, offer brief summaries of the books, and give the stage to the scientists to tell you about the works of literature that keep them inspired. I Turn Scientific Renderings of Space into Art

<img src="https://lede-admin.nautil.us/wp-content/uploads/sites/70/sites/3/nautilus/jHNGfF3C-French_HERO-2.png" referrerpolicy="no-referrer"> <p class="is-style-drop-cap-with-border"><span class="dropcap">F</span>or many people, Luís Calçada’s imaginative interpretations of the universe <em>are</em> the universe—even if the events they illustrate can’t be observed with the naked eye or happened billions of light-years ago. Calçada works as an <a href="https://luiscalcada.com/">illustrator</a> for the <a href="https://www.eso.org/public/">European Southern Observatory</a> (ESO) near Munich, where he creates stunning images of cosmic events in flamboyant color, such as <a href="https://luiscalcada.com/forged-in-fire" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">one</a> that recently graced the cover of <em>Nature</em> depicting a fiery explosion around a protostar.</p> <p>Calçada’s journey into astronomical art began when he spied <em>Contact</em>, a 1985 work of science-fiction by Carl Sagan, as a kid in a bookstore. The <a href="https://bookshopapocalypse.com/products/contact-by-carl-sagan-first-edition-first-printing-1985?srsltid=AfmBOor6Sa6qTutpoutQSKE64IH2Rv4bRkgt3_xrhzTtYM0FnFSUHa_Z" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cover</a> showed an inky Earth floating in a sea of darkness, a mysterious fingerprint of light emerging out of the milky abyss. Calçada was so struck by that vision that he asked his parents to buy him the book on the spot. After he read it, he devoured all of Sagan’s other books. So he left astronomy for art. We caught up with Calçada to talk about the relationship between beauty and scientific understanding.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Your images are lush and cinematic. Do you think beauty can ever get in the way of scientific truth?&nbsp;&nbsp;</strong></p> <p>I think beauty is a trigger for curiosity, because the fascination with something extraordinary—the way a star works, or the explosion of a supernova—makes people want to understand it. Calçada</em></figcaption></figure> <p><strong>Have you ever argued with a scientist over artistic license you took in one of your illustrations?</strong></p> <p>There are a few kinds of scientists here at ESO. When you’re working on a press release, sometimes you get those who are extremely happy with whatever you give them. Because quite often they’re just working on data and code and plots. But when they see a nice interpretation of their data, they’re quite happy.</p> <p>But there are other scientists who tend to say, “Oh, but maybe this could be like that.” And sometimes there’s a bit of a struggle to massage them into understanding that what they’re suggesting is actually not relevant for the story, or important for the general audience. Of course, we always want to make these illustrations as true to the science as possible. But it’s our job as communicators to understand what message we want to transmit to people, right? Because sometimes the science is quite clear for us, and for our scientists, but for the audience it’s not. Unlike the planets in our solar system, these objects do not orbit stars, free-floating on their own instead.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.eso.org/public/archives/releases/sciencepapers/eso2516/eso2516a.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The new observations,</a>&nbsp;made with the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope, reveal that this free-floating planet is eating up gas and dust from its surroundings at a rate of 6 billion tonnes a second. This is the strongest growth rate ever recorded for a rogue planet, or a planet of any kind, providing valuable insights into how they form and grow. <em>Credit: ESO / Luís Calçada</em></figcaption></figure> <p><strong>Can you give me an example of something a scientist wanted to change?</strong></p> <p>One recent project comes to mind—the simulated <a href="https://www.eso.org/public/videos/eso2520b/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">explosion</a> of a star <a href="https://nautil.us/exploding-stars-dramatic-first-moments-captured-for-the-first-time-1247503/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">going supernova</a> (published in November of 2025). One of the scientists—he’s a brilliant person—paid too much attention to the details. And we had a lot of back and forth, trying to negotiate some things that shouldn’t go into the illustration and the animation. For example, in this illustration, we see a few things happening at once. In the real world, these things would happen at different timescales. The first outflow from the poles of the exploding star, maybe that would happen very fast. Whereas the other parts of the explosion would happen over seconds. And then the rest of flowing out happens maybe in days, and we’re showing it all in just 20 seconds of animation.</p> <p>That’s why it’s important for us to always include captions for the images on our website. We send those captions to the journalists, very clearly explaining, this is an artist’s impression. But we also understand that these animations and illustrations have a life of their own. They get reproduced elsewhere on websites, and the caption gets lost. But they can create a false impression about what the universe really looks like. We’ve done so many illustrations of colorful events, but to human eyes, most of the universe is just black, empty. The timescales are also sped up for a lot of these things. Back in the day when I was doing some activities with the general public as an astronomer, when you’re trying to show them things in the telescope, they’re expecting to see this very colorful, dramatic scene. And you’re like, “Can you see it?” And they’re like, “No, I don’t.”</p> <p><strong>Do your images ever serve as visual hypotheses? Or are they always explanations of a settled idea or a finding that’s been established?</strong></p> <p>We try to be very careful about how much these images are guessing. I think the role here is the science, the discovery. And we’re just trying to help the science get to the public. There was some negativity surrounding this particular image, because some people thought it was too realistic looking. And that’s a danger. I saw people complaining. Some people were like, “Why are you showing this? Why are you not showing the supernova itself?” Because the actual supernova image was <a href="https://www.eso.org/public/images/eso2520b/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">just a few pixels</a>, so it wasn’t very interesting. What we tried to show is what the astronomers inferred through these <a href="https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/sciadv.adx2925#F1" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">complex methods</a>.</p> <p>The scientists were really happy at how well we portrayed the phenomenon in the end, but it triggered an internal discussion about ways of using these images. Even this week, we had more discussions about future use of AI in our work, ethical issues. Because it’s true that people may start getting fed up with this kind of overflow of bright, colorful images. And our work that’s tightly developed with scientists might get lost in that noise. We have to explore ways of cutting through the noise.</p> <p><strong>Read more: “<a href="https://nautil.us/the-art-of-quantum-forces-698495/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Art of Quantum Forces</a>”</strong></p> <p><strong>What are some ways you might do that?</strong></p> <p>I use Reddit quite a lot, and I saw some people commenting along the same lines, calling it AI slop, and so I kind of pitched in on the conversation. I actually tried to explain a bit about the process with the scientists. It was quite cool to see the surprise in some of the people on Reddit. The Math Shows Jackson Pollock Painted Like a Child Would

<img src="https://lede-admin.nautil.us/wp-content/uploads/sites/70/sites/3/nautilus/X8JxNNU4-French_HERO.png" referrerpolicy="no-referrer"> <p class="is-style-drop-cap-with-border"><span class="dropcap">J</span>ackson Pollock’s paintings look like beautiful accidents. The 20th-century painter spilled, drizzled, and flung paint from brushes, cans, syringes, and sticks at canvases laid out on the floor in seemingly haphazard and unchoreographed fashion. The resulting blizzards of emotion and color dazzled audiences and made him famous.</p> <p>But while art lovers admire the work, scientists have long aimed to understand the laws that govern them—in part to help devise tools that could help distinguish his paintings from imitations. Recently, one international team set out to see whether his process was closer to how children or adults might paint. To answer that question, they asked a group of adults aged 18 to 25 and children aged 4 to 6 to make paintings in the style of Pollock, by pouring paint onto canvases.</p> <p>The researchers found that the kids’ paintings made in this manner resembled genuine Pollacks more than did those from adult painters. They published their <a href="https://www.frontiersin.org/journals/physics/articles/10.3389/fphy.2025.1673780/full" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">results</a> in <em>Frontiers in Physics</em>.</p> <p>To arrive at this conclusion the scientists used two forms of statistical analysis: <a href="https://www.opb.org/article/2024/07/12/university-of-oregon-professor-trains-ai-to-distinguish-between-real-and-fake-jackson-pollock-paintings/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fractal analysis</a> and lacunarity. Whereas fractal analysis measures complexity, lacunarity reveals something more subtle: the rhythm and space in a complex network. Measuring lacunarity has helped scientists understand natural systems such as galaxies in the universe. They also asked people to rate the finished paintings, and used their findings to assess two famous art works: <em>No. 14</em>, by Jackson Pollock, and <em>Young Man Intrigued by the Flight of a Non-Euclidean Fly</em>, by Max Ernst, who used his own distinct paint pouring technique.</p> <figure class="wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper"> <iframe loading="lazy" title="&quot;Jackson Pollock 51&quot; by Hans Namuth (1951)" width="710" height="533" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/6cgBvpjwOGo?start=162&amp;feature=oembed" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" allowfullscreen=""></iframe> </div><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>Credit: John Muse / YouTube</em></figcaption></figure> <p>The researchers found that the children’s art featured lower fractal dimensions and higher lacunarity—they were simpler, with less detailed fine structure, and showed more clumping, with larger gaps between clumps. Adult paintings showed the opposite: higher fractal dimensions and lower lacunarity. In other words, the adult works had more complex detailed patterns, while the lines of paint were more evenly spread out.</p> <p>“Our study shows that the artistic patterns generated by children are distinguishable from those created by adults when using the pouring technique made famous by Jackson Pollock,” said senior author Richard Taylor, a professor of physics, psychology, and art at the University of Oregon, in a <a href="https://phys.org/news/2025-11-kid-jackson-pollock-famous-child.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">statement</a>. “Remarkably, our findings suggest that children’s paintings bear a closer resemblance to Pollock paintings than those created by adults.”</p> <p>Taylor and his co-authors hypothesized that the differences between adults’ and kids’ works might be related to how body balance and coordination evolve as we age. When a person pours paint while leaning over a canvas, the body is constantly making adjustments to balance. Because adults have more control, they make finer adjustments, leading to more complex patterns, whereas kids make choppier movements.</p> <p>Surprisingly, the scientists found that the choppier, clumpier paintings made by the kids appeared more pleasant and interesting than the adults’ works to the people asked to evaluate them. Even more fascinating, the patterns in Pollock’s <em>No. 14</em> were just at the edge of the adult range, closer to the kinds of patterns found in the children’s paintings.</p> <p><strong>Read more: “</strong><a href="https://nautil.us/the-pleasure-of-patterns-in-art-1233358/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><strong>The Pleasure of Patterns in Art</strong></a><strong>”</strong></p> <p>The famous artist’s paintings featured more clumping and less finely detailed patterns than the average for adults. The scientists note that according to Pollock scholars, the painter had limited physical coordination due to a birth trauma that affected his manual dexterity and coordination. Even more surprising, Max Ernst’s work fell firmly within the children’s range on both fractal and lacunarity analysis. Perhaps because he used a distinct technique, hanging a can of paint like a pendulum and guiding it with his hands, restricting natural movement, the authors point out.</p> <p>The study was just the latest to try to decode Pollock’s artistic process. A few years ago, another team <a href="https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0223706#pone.0223706.ref006" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">tackled </a>an even more basic question: Was Pollock even “dripping” paint at all? After analyzing extensive video of Pollock in action and attempting to experimentally reproduce his painting process, they found his lines of color did not actually obey laws of fluid dynamics, known as coiling instability, that apply to freely dripping liquids. Due to the ways gravity, inertia, and viscosity interact, streams of viscous liquid, such as honey or paint, tend to curl upon themselves as they drip, stacking like coiled rope before spreading across a surface.</p> <p>The force with which Pollock flung his paints caused them to follow a pattern known in physics as fluid mechanical sewing machine—yes, this is a <a href="https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/journal-of-fluid-mechanics/article/abs/fall-of-a-viscous-thread-onto-a-moving-surface-a-fluidmechanical-sewing-machine/35A118A31F3A78E2BEA168EC6594715B" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">technical term</a>—because the coils move sideways in orderly fashion as they contact the surface, resembling sewing patterns.</p> <p>The scientists argued that Pollock must have intentionally moved his hand at certain speeds and heights and selected specific paints to prevent his colors from fragmenting before hitting the canvas.</p> <p>Whether measuring balance, fractals, or fluid dynamics, scientists continue to search for order in Pollock’s frenzied creative process. In Awe of Tiny Things

<img src="https://lede-admin.nautil.us/wp-content/uploads/sites/70/sites/3/nautilus/Neith_HERO-2.png" referrerpolicy="no-referrer"> <p class="is-style-drop-cap-with-border"><span class="dropcap">O</span>ne of the earliest influences for artist, writer, and filmmaker Michael Benson, he says, was the sci-fi epic <em>2001: A Space Odyssey. </em>Beyond stirring childhood wonder, he says the movie impressed upon his 6-year-old brain that grand subjects such as our role in the universe and our seemingly inexorable need to explore are worthy topics for art, not “just” science or philosophy. Later, it sparked questions for Benson about humanity’s place in space and time, themes he has been exploring through his work for the last quarter century.</p> <p>“My game for quite a while now has been to use scientific research methodologies and technologies to investigate the phenomenal world, not as a scientist, but as an artist and an image maker,” says Benson. His latest book, <a href="https://store.abramsbooks.com/products/nanocosmos" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Nanocosmos</em></a>, zooms in on minuscule specimens including single-celled organisms like radiolarians and diatoms, as well as insects, microscopic flowers, and snowflakes to highlight the intricacies of the natural world at the microscopic level. In a nod to our planet’s place in a much larger cosmic world, he also includes micrographs of lunar samples gathered during the Apollo program. The book features 300 highly detailed images<strong> </strong>constructed from scanning electron microscope scans made over the course of six years at the Canadian Museum of Nature. <em>Nanocosmos </em>is both a journey into infinitesimal landscapes on Earth and a meditation on how humans visually explore and represent the physical world<em>.</em></p> <blockquote class="wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow"> <p>If you massage the bridge of your nose, you are touching a piece of the solar system.</p> </blockquote> <p>In earlier projects, Benson focused on the universe that surrounds us through exploration of the solar system and deep space phenomena before pointing the lens back at Earth to examine the complex microscopic worlds at our fingertips. He staged a series of large-scale shows of planetary landscape photography &nbsp;around the&nbsp;world and has also produced&nbsp;films, and authored books, including <em>Space Odyssey: Stanley Kubrick, Arthur C. Clarke, and the Making of a Masterpiece</em>. With director Terrence Malick, Benson worked on visual effects for the film <em>Tree of Life</em>, crafting sequences which drew in part from his first two books, <em>Beyond</em> (2003) and <em>Far Out</em> (2009).</p> <p>I recently spoke with Benson about the magic of photography, the intrigue of dung beetles, and humans’ attempts to visualize the universe.</p> <p><strong>What is the origin story of this book?</strong></p> <p>It’s interesting that you use the term origin story, because one of the key sections of the book is an investigation of various single-celled aquatic organisms. There is a kind of synchronicity between the origin of life and the origin story of the book, which attempts to show some of the complexity and fascination of single-celled organisms, latter day evolutionary descendants of the origin story of life on Earth. I talk a little bit in the book about how ludicrous it was that I was blundering around in the tropics or on the Adriatic coast with my tweezers and my ethanol vials searching for what intrigued me, while my family was swimming at the beach. Or, in the Caribbean, just looking in rain forests for micro flowers and little things that might jump out. But on the other hand, I had a good idea that radiolarians and diatoms and dinoflagellates would be fascinating. There was plenty of evidence of that, reaching back to German marine biologist <a href="https://nautil.us/flowers-and-the-birth-of-ecology-917041/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ernst Haeckel </a>in the 19th century.</p> <p><strong>A lot of your previous work looked at planets and other objects in the universe. How did you go from the vastness of space down to the very tiniest bits of life on our planet?</strong></p> <p>Well, this will sound pretentious probably but taken together I view all the books I’ve done for Abrams Books as a kind of<em> gesamtkunstwerk</em>, which is a German word that means comprehensive artwork that has many facets and synthesizes many genres. Like them, <em>Nanocosmos</em> is also an investigation of space, it’s just at another scale. Because, you know, if you massage the bridge of your nose, you are touching a piece of the solar system. And so all these fantastic subjects that I was privileged to look at are part of the solar system. They roll these gigantic spheres of dung, sometimes for more than a quarter mile, and bury them. They’re so perfectly built to push something way bigger than themselves around. They look like the most extraordinary, powerful, living manifestations of the need to move weight around. Not only that, but they’re so beautiful. The fact that these bulldozers can take off and fly is just a miracle. In general, insects are just so dazzling in the microscope.</p> <p><strong>Do you have a sense of why so many </strong><a href="https://nautil.us/why-nature-prefers-hexagons-235863/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><strong>patterns and shapes</strong></a><strong> tend to repeat themselves throughout nature and what that might say about the world around us?</strong></p> <p>I’m not sure I entirely agree, by which I mean, nothing else on Earth really looks like a radiolarian, with its polygonal silica shell, irregular polygons perforated by radiating spines. Nothing at a larger scale that I’ve ever seen looks anything like that. And the same really holds true for dinoflagellates and diatoms. They are very specific solutions to their own ecological niche. About 6 millimeters wide.</figcaption></figure> <blockquote class="wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow"> <p></p> </blockquote> <p><strong>How does </strong><strong><em>Nanocosmos</em></strong><strong> build on past projects?</strong></p> <p><em>Nanocosmos</em> is a continuation of looking at how we use images to understand the universe. I mean, there’s a symbiotic relationship between representation and understanding. Photography has always been alchemical in a certain way. It’s a form of magic in which physical materials, like chemicals and photographic emulsions, can be used to record other physical materials and chemical reactions, by which I mean the larger physical world. As human beings, we’re a way in which the universe looks at itself. It’s not surprising that we’ve produced more powerful technologies enabling us to do that better, more deeply, with greater magnification. My other books cover such things from the solar system to the Big Bang into the history of human attempts to visualize the universe in graphic form. <em>Nanocosmos</em> links right up with those.</p> <p><strong>What was the process for making the images in your book?</strong></p> <p>With a lot of the interplanetary material, the pixel count of the raw images taken from the spacecraft wasn’t that high. So they had to be tiled and composited to produce higher resolutions. When I finally had access to a scanning electron microscope, and I had practically unlimited resolutions available, I overshot the mark, and I did a lot of scanning. All of that resulted in a mountain of work later where I had to assemble final composite images. There are also a whole series of images where you see insects and plants together but they’re not as natural as they may look in the sense that they were put in ethanol, then dried in something called a critical point dryer, which is a way of exchanging liquids for gas at high pressure with minimal damage to the subject. If I didn’t smash the subject, then there was another delicate operation, which is mounting the subject on a little sample stub, and putting it in a sputter coater, which coats the samples, and they end up looking like jewelry because they’re coated in platinum or gold. Then you put it in the vacuum chamber of the microscope, and there’s a whole new set of things to learn and issues when it comes to imaging the subject. It’s a labor of love.</p> <p><strong>What do you hope people will take away from this work?</strong></p> <p>I don’t want to prescribe anything. But I’ll be satisfied if people come away with a sense of amazement at the complexity of the forms that nature can produce at these extraordinarily tiny scales. And if that helps foster an appreciation of this biosphere that produced us, which we are not treating with the respect that it deserves, I will be satisfied. Can Embracing the Unknown Save Us From Dystopia?

<img src="https://lede-admin.nautil.us/wp-content/uploads/sites/70/sites/3/nautilus/Hilden_sci-fiLead-rightside.png" referrerpolicy="no-referrer"> <p class="is-style-drop-cap-with-border"><span class="dropcap">I</span> see technology. I see spirits. They are the same thing,” writes Daniel H. Wilson at the climax of his latest novel <em>Hole in the Sky</em>. And indeed, the relationships between science and faith, and between human invention and mysticism, are at the core of the book’s narrative, which follows the arrival of a potentially apocalyptic threat from the cosmos and chronicles the efforts of the scientists trying to make sense of it. When human technologies become increasingly indistinguishable from magic, Wilson suggests, we would be wise to have respect for the limits of our own knowledge.</p> <p>Wilson is not new to apocalyptic fiction. After completing his Ph.D. in robotics, he wrote a string of techno-thrillers, including <em>Robopocalypse</em>, <em>Amped</em>, and <em>Robogenesis, </em>which explore humanity’s struggle with machines that alter and endanger civilization as we know it. So realistic and detailed were the techno-risks posed by his work that Wilson was asked to participate in threat forecasting for the United States military, analyzing how various technologies could be used to nefarious ends.</p> <p>From unidentified flying objects and other anomalous phenomena to wearables that infuse users with godlike powers to interstellar space travel, <a href="https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/763900/hole-in-the-sky-by-daniel-h-wilson/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Hole in the Sky</em></a> weaves together an array of current and future tech concepts, all cast through a prism of Native American folklore inspired by the author’s Cherokee heritage. <em>Nautilus</em> spoke with Wilson about the shamanic aspects of science, the television series <em>Alien Earth</em>, the meaning of techno-tradish, and his greatest techno-fear: that the U.S. is fast becoming an inescapable surveillance state.</p> <blockquote class="wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow"> <p>This novel really revolves around our relationship with the unknown.</p> </blockquote> <p><strong>You have a Ph.D. in robotics, so I’m presuming that you have a pretty good grasp of technology and science. When you’re working on a book like this, how much do you pull from that science background, and how much do you depend on your imagination?</strong></p> <p>I love doing worldbuilding and making sure that everything hangs together, but also you want to be surprising and do fun things. In this one, I stuck to some pretty realistic stuff, but then I got loose and a little crazy with the native mythologies and cosmologies.</p> <p>In terms of the real-world stuff, I’ve done some threat forecasting for the United States Air Force, where they get a science-fiction author to come in, pair you with an analyst, brief you on technologies they’re worried about, and you write these realistic scenarios in which people use the technology in bad ways. Having done that and interacted with some of the military folks, I built one character from all that experience.</p> <p>And then I have some pretty fun bits where I fool around with quantum computing and the idea of retro-causality, which is this idea that quantum mechanics unfolds moving forward in time the same way it unfolds moving backward. The math goes either way, which means things that happen in the future can affect things that are happening now. I’m not trying to predict the future or anything like that anymore with my science fiction. I’m more focused on the human stories in what I write, and I try to let the science fiction amplify whatever that human story is that’s happening underneath.</p> <p><strong>Where did the</strong> <strong>ideas for </strong><strong><em>Hole in the Sky</em></strong><strong> come from?</strong></p> <p>I grew up in the Cherokee Nation in North Tulsa. It’s a sovereign tribal nation that sits on top of state and federal boundaries close to a place called Spiro Mounds, which are the ruins of the mound builder civilization, the native people before the tribes we know today. They were earthen mounds, so most have been bulldozed, and people don’t even know about them. They’re super ancient. The Spiro Mounds are literally laid out in the same pattern as the Pleiades constellation—the Seven Sisters.</p> <p>According to Cherokee cosmology, these mounds have an impact on the cosmos, and certain stories that go with them. I wanted to dive into that kind of mythology and cosmology, what I consider native science fiction. The Cherokee have a story about the star woman who came from the Pleiades constellation and brought Cherokee people to planet Earth. That’s just science fiction—spaceships and natives flying through space. I wanted to dig into that, go back to where I was from, use this really cool setting, and merge Indigenous science fiction with the techno-thriller style I’ve been writing for so long. One reviewer called it “techno-tradish,” being raised traditional. I thought that was pretty cool as kind of a new genre.</p> <p><strong>In your book, the Man Downstairs, also known as MD, has kind of a shamanic role. He’s working with science, but those around him have to believe what he says and take it on faith. What do you think of that shamanic tension between science and faith?</strong></p> <p>This novel really revolves around our relationship with the unknown. That’s why I chose my three main characters. You have a soldier who wants to destroy the unknown—he’s afraid of it. You have a scientist who wants to break the unknown apart, understand it, exploit it. And then you have a native character who lives where this all is going down, and he’s just living with the unknown. If you think of science and the military as Western perspectives, they’re kind of angry postures toward the unknown. Then you have a more faith-based posture—“I don’t need to understand every detail, I know we’re all part of the same thing.” I was playing with those tensions intentionally.</p> <p>The native character, Jim, has lost his young son, who drowned. He’s reuniting with his daughter, who he hasn’t seen in a couple years in the aftermath of that. He considers himself forsaken. He has lost touch with his cultural roots, because it hasn’t been working for him. But as you get into the novel, you realize none of these individuals is the big square-jaw hero who’s going to come in and blast the aliens to pieces. It’s more complicated than that. All of these perspectives are necessary to make it through and survive the unknown.</p> <blockquote class="wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow"> <p>As long as you don’t fiddle with the brain too much, I feel like you’re still a human being.</p> </blockquote> <p><strong>You write, “Reality is made of conscious and the unconscious, both at the same time.” You go on to explain that we have to have respect for the unknown. Do you think there’s a limit to what science can know?</strong></p> <p>Yeah, absolutely. People have mentioned there’s a little bit of cosmic horror in this. Our brains are <a href="https://nautil.us/reality-is-your-brains-best-guess-312269/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">creating reality</a> in real time. The reality we’re experiencing is dictated by what’s kept us alive and reproducing all the way back. There’s all kinds of stuff our reality doesn’t concern itself with, but that doesn’t mean it’s not there. Titanic forces can be moving just out of sight—the real cosmic Cthulhu type stuff.</p> <p>There are limits to what our science can unveil. At some point we have to live with the unknown and respect that it’s there. Part of me is thinking about this because of all the unidentified anomalous phenomenon and video coming out. In my work with the Air Force, talking to generals, they’ve said, “We don’t know what this stuff is. There could really be first contact.” That’s scary to think of. But we’ve done it before. Copernicus realized everything doesn’t rotate around Earth. Suddenly, everything people believed to be true was wrong. It took us down off our pedestal. History is one long voyage of discovery where we learn we’re less important than we thought. This next round—how it affects people—will be based on their outlook toward what they don’t or can’t understand.</p> <p>I feel like Native culture tends to be more comfortable with the unknown. If you look at Cherokee oral traditions before Christianity, the stories were shades of gray. No good guys or bad guys, more like tricksters. No winning or losing. Then Christianity gets introduced, and the stories start changing. You start to see heroes, villains, good and evil. That wasn’t in the DNA of the culture. The DNA of the culture was being comfortable with things being good and evil at the same time, not having the answer all the time.</p> <p><strong>What do you think about this sudden explosion of Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAPs) in the news? Do you think we’ve already been visited by extraterrestrials, or that we will be in the near future?</strong></p> <p>My thoughts have evolved over time. Since 2006 or so, I’ve been on a radio program called <em>Coast to Coast AM</em> with George Noory. Everyone’s super into aliens on this show—it goes all night. When I first went on, I thought there’s no way, it’s silly science fiction. But then I went to the Aspen Security Conference a couple years ago, and General Glenn VanHerck, who at the time was in charge of NORAD [North American Aerospace Defense Command, tasked with monitoring for aerospace threats] and NORTHCOM [United States North Command, oversees domestic defense] straight up said: “Yeah, these things are real, and we don’t know what they are.”</p> <p>If there really are artifacts we don’t think are ours or any other nation’s, and we don’t know where they came from, then I’m sure they’ve had contact with us. That’s pretty wild to think of, but there it is. So I think it’s really timely and worthwhile to think of alien invasion stories that aren’t just colonial fear projections.</p> <p>If you look at most alien invasion stories, the aliens show up, extract resources, destroy culture, destroy monuments, steal bodies—the pod people. They just want what we have. That’s what colonizers have done to Indigenous people forever. It’s this fear that what our civilization is founded on is going to happen to us. Why not think of it from a different perspective? Tell that fun story from a different cultural lens. Crack that genre.</p> <p><strong>You write that “Human beings plus technology equals superhuman.” Throughout the narrative, one of the characters fuses with her technology. At times, it seems like she’s herself, and sometimes it seems like she’s become a machine that even she can’t quite control. So, when humans </strong><a href="https://nautil.us/encounters-with-the-posthuman-234320/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><strong>fuse with technology</strong></a><strong>, will we still be humans, and will we still be in control?</strong></p> <p>With that character, she’s kind of dissociated from humanity because she doesn’t feel like she belongs, and so she slowly is dissociating from the whole idea maybe even of being human. I’m watching [the television series] <em>Alien Earth</em> right now, and they’ve got the cyborgs talking to the full synthetics talking to robots that have human consciousnesses inside them, and then there’s regular humans. This is such a fun playground for <a href="https://nautil.us/does-science-fiction-shape-the-future-543468/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">science fiction</a>, and I’ve played with it too. I wrote a book called <em>Amped</em> that was all about humans upgrading themselves. And my feeling is this: As long as you don’t fiddle with the brain too much, I feel like you’re still a human being.</p> <p>But one thing that I’ve been contemplating lately is this notion of how much of our bodies and our embodiment as humans is all about that biological imperative of finding people you love, eating food you like—all of those things that human beings need to do to perpetuate the species, the reasons that we’re here. And then once you take away those biological imperatives—maybe you’re invincible now, or maybe you don’t live in a human body anymore, just something that looks like a human body—then are you really still human? And also, should you be?</p> <p><strong>You also write, “I see technology. I see spirits. They are the same thing.” Can you elaborate on that a little bit?</strong></p> <p>I was diving into the notion of Indigenous technology. There’s this feeling that whenever we see technology, we think of shiny gadgets and typically these Western ideas, but there’s a lot of advanced Indigenous technology—a lot of stuff in forest management and ecosystems—that Native people have figured out and that people just overlook. They can’t see that it’s technology because it doesn’t fit their idea of what technology is. And as we move through this novel and super weird stuff starts happening with this entity, Jim, our Native character, starts to realize that this entity is a type of technology, only it’s an Indigenous technology.</p> <p><strong>Your work deals with a lot of apocalyptic concepts and big, looming disasters. So for you, here in the real world, what would you say are your biggest global apocalyptic concerns?</strong></p> <p>Oh, man. Okay, well, don’t get me talking too much about this, but the main thing I’m worried about right now is that our whole society is turning into a system to funnel money from the people who have the least money to the people who have the most, particularly with AI and social media. Right now, all of our stock markets are doing really great while people are starving and going homeless, and it’s because it’s reorienting to take advantage of all of these AI technologies, but the AI depends on data. So this means that our whole civilization, our whole society, is being reorganized and it’s standing on this pedestal of needing data from everyday people at all times. And this, to me, feels very dystopian. They’re trying to get our data by putting wearables on us. They want us to be wearing cameras at all times. They’re putting cameras in our cars. They’re putting cameras everywhere under the guise of safety to get that data. We’re gonna start seeing humanoid robots in public, and they’re gonna be collecting data all the time. And so really this kind of surveillance society where we’re all just the product, and there’s a few billionaires from five companies, like in <em>Alien Earth</em>, that are just profiteering off of us to the brink of apocalypse—that’s the thing that I’m worried about.</p> <p>I want to just start a movement: Just take a walk in the woods with no data. Leave your phone, take a walk in the woods. I mean, because that’s anathema to all of these guys. This is what they’re allergic to—the idea that you’re gonna be sitting for 10 minutes and not generating data. Look at China. That appears to be the direction we’re headed right now. Making Art with Pythons and Lionfish

<img src="https://lede-admin.nautil.us/wp-content/uploads/sites/70/sites/3/nautilus/Goldiee_HERO.png" referrerpolicy="no-referrer"> <p class="is-style-drop-cap-with-border"><span class="dropcap">S</span>ome of the most destructive forces in nature are beautiful to behold: A lionfish that drifts like a jeweled fan through the water, a python that glides with muscular grace through the grass, a carp that flashes silver as it leaps from a river.<br><br>These creatures can unravel entire ecosystems.</p> <p>They are <a href="https://nautil.us/the-starlings-curious-odyssey-1202795/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">invasive species</a>. Carried across oceans by global trade, released by human carelessness, or deliberately introduced for industry, they multiply in habitats that are not prepared for them. Then they devour resources and displace existing animals.<a href="https://www.bco-dmo.org/dataset/655342?utm_source=.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> Studies show</a> lionfish can reduce native reef fish populations by nearly 80 percent in a matter of weeks. Burmese pythons in Florida are responsible for decimating populations of some small mammals by more than 90 percent. Carp crowd waterways so densely that boats struggle to pass. These losses ripple outward: Food webs collapse, ecosystems suffocate. By conservative estimates, invasive species now <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41597-020-00586-z?utm_source=.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cost the global economy</a> hundreds of billions of dollars <a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10249565/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">annually</a> and <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0048969721063968?utm_source=.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">contribute</a> to more than half of all documented extinctions.</p> <blockquote class="wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow"> <p>“The beauty is edged with menace.”</p> </blockquote> <p>But one artist is turning these animals into works of art to make the dangers more visible. <a href="https://www.laurashape.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Laura Shape</a> takes the skins of invasive species, which are usually discarded after they are trapped or hunted, and uses them as raw material for shimmering textural paintings. Shape works with a group called <a href="https://www.inversaleathers.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">INVERSA</a>, which processes the skins into leather and other pliable materials like fabric and decorative panels. Several of Shape’s pieces are currently featured in<em> Under the Sea</em>, a virtual show supported by UNESCO. She also aims to place her works in public spaces—such as hotels, airports, and hospitals—in regions affected by ecological disruption, so that the art lives where the problem is most urgent.</p> <p>“The material is the message,” says Shape. She makes lionfish hides glow like stained glass and weaves python skins into sculptures that ripple like rivers. “When I use invasive fish skin or python leather, I’m forcing the ecosystem into the artwork. You can’t separate them.” Her point is not metaphorical but ecological. These materials are literally pieces of the problem, recast as forms that demand attention.<br><br>And the attention matters. <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s44185-025-00097-3?utm_source=.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Research</a> in conservation psychology shows that emotional connection and beauty can inspire environmental action more effectively than data alone. A painting made from lionfish leather catches the eye—but it also carries the memory of a predator that empties reefs. A sculpture stitched from carp hides may appear meditative, like flowing water, until the viewer recalls how carp suffocate rivers. Shape tells me: “I want people to feel both awe and discomfort. Yet art can play a role that science alone cannot. It creates intimacy. It brings the crisis into living rooms and galleries, into the hands of collectors who now hold a fragment of the ecological imbalance.&nbsp;</p> <p>Some critics counter that aestheticizing invaders risks glorifying them. But the best of this art resists that trap. It highlights the paradox rather than erasing it. The objects are beautiful, but the beauty is edged with menace. They are reminders of what happens when ecosystems lose balance—and of what humans can do, however imperfectly, to repair. “Every invasive species tells two stories,” Shape says. “The story of collapse, and the story of resilience. My job is to bring those together—to make people look, and then to make them care.”</p> <p><a href="https://nautil.us/i-heard-the-wild-donkey-bray-714635/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Invasive species</a> test the resilience of the natural world and of human imagination. They expose how fragile the ecological balance is, how swiftly beauty can tip into destruction. But they also remind us that what is broken may be reimagined. When an invader’s body becomes a painting or sculpture, it is not simply decoration. What Makes an Opera Star Stand Out?

<img src="https://lede-admin.nautil.us/wp-content/uploads/sites/70/sites/3/nautilus/Figure1-scaled.jpg" referrerpolicy="no-referrer"> <p class="is-style-drop-cap-with-border"><span class="dropcap">W</span>hen Haruka Kondo stepped into the singing booth, she was determined to strip away the mystery behind a successful vocal performance. A starting pitch on a digital piano queued her into <em>Caro mio ben</em>, the Italian baroque aria, which Kondo sang<em> </em>into a recording device, a cappella. The booth was narrow—she could touch every side if she stretched her arms out—and almost completely soundproof, specially designed by Kondo for her latest experiment.</p> <p>Kondo is an award-winning soprano and Ph.D. student at the Music Neuroscience Laboratory at Keio University in Japan, where she is helping develop the study of vocalization into a science. The goal of her <a href="https://www.frontiersin.org/journals/psychology/articles/10.3389/fpsyg.2025.1568982/full" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">experiment</a> was to “<em>scientifically</em> identify the key elements of a prize-winning performance,” she told me over email. “For centuries, singers have been guided by abstract and subjective instructions like ‘make your voice richer.'” Her experiment looks for the data behind the dazzle.</p> <blockquote class="wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow"> <p>Vibrato is the audible equivalent of a voice trembling with feeling.</p> </blockquote> <p><em>Caro mio ben</em> is a staple of vocal training in Japan:&nbsp; simple, introductory, with “uncomplicated structure” and “<a href="https://nautil.us/the-necessity-of-musical-hallucinations-235156/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">universal familiarity</a>,” Kondo said of why she chose the song.&nbsp; But it is also a subtle piece, with a delicate tune and wide emotional range, the perfect testbed for operatic prowess. In the booth, Kondo gave herself only one shot at the recording, mimicking the high-pressure conditions of a singing competition. Nine others, all female performers, followed suit, each recruited from Kondo’s professional network of opera singers.</p> <p>What they found was that vibrato matters most. “Our analysis revealed that perceived vibrato<em> </em>was the single most important predictor of a high overall [performance] score,” Kondo said, something that she feels is a profound discovery for the field. Vibrato is the regular, pulsating change in the pitch of a single sustained note, the audible equivalent of a voice trembling with feeling. It is a hallmark of western classical singing, although some singers of rock and roll or pop music occasionally also sing with this musical effect. Think Elvis Presley, Billie Holiday, or Robert Plant.</p> <p>In the study, vibrato trumped five other metrics used by the judges—four qualified instructors with decades of experience teaching vocals—to score the performances. These were resonance (amplification), timbre (the equivalent of “tone color” for a voice), diction (pronunciation and enunciation of the Italian), intonation, and expressiveness.</p> <p>“I don’t necessarily agree that [vibrato is] something that’s overlooked,” said Taylor Colton Stone, a musician and scientist who specializes in voice and speech pathologies. “But part of the problem with vibrato is we don’t really fully understand why it happens,” said Stone, who was not involved with the study.</p> <p>Though it is possible to learn vibrato, it is rarely taught and is usually considered the outcome of overall good singing technique, rather than a skill. “The predominant theory right now is that it has to do with some neural oscillations that are related to natural tremor rates in your body,” said Stone. “And whenever you have everything lined up and you’re singing healthily, with good support, good breath pressure, a relatively relaxed larynx, these oscillations will naturally come out in your vocal folds.”</p> <p>As part of the study Kondo also analyzed the spectrograms of the recordings for their acoustic features, which could only be deduced through computation, and compared these against the overall score that judges awarded each performance. “Since opera singers must project their voices <a href="https://nautil.us/the-man-who-designed-ghost-armies-and-opera-houses-236032/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">over an orchestra in a large hall</a> without a microphone, we predicted that the singing power ratio— an acoustic measure of the voice’s carrying power—would be a critical element,” she said. The results of the study corroborated that assumption: The more singing power they had, the more highly the judges rated them on a 100-point scale.</p> <p>Kondo hopes that her findings can now be usefully translated into teaching. “Imagine a voice lesson,” Kondo told me, “Instead of just relying on the teacher’s ear, a student can see their voice on a screen. Using acoustic analysis software, a teacher can point to a specific number—the Singing Power Ratio, or SPR—and say, ‘Let’s work on raising this value.’ This gives the student a concrete target: boosting the energy in the key 2-4 kHz range that makes a voice carry.”</p> <p>Kondo isn’t the first to analyze the spectrograms of singers’ performances in search of the formula to their success. In 2004 Patricia Howes together with colleagues from the University of Sydney <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/15193655/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">studied</a> the vibrato of several renowned opera singers, including Maria Callas, Edita Gruberová, Joan Sutherland, and Leontyne Price. Judges were especially stumped by Price’s performance, where 34 percent had found her vibrato extent to be too long, while 20 percent had found it too fast, none of which affected their overall rating of her singing. The same study found that Maria Callas was unmatched in her vibrato expressions of “madness,” while Gruberová and Sutherland were best at putting it to use expressing “tender passion” and “sadness.”</p> <p>“I do not think that we are ever going to get to a point where any kind of acoustic measure is going to really capture the full multi-dimensional nature of a voice,” Stone told me. “We still need someone’s ear to be listening to it.” <img decoding="async" class="wp-image-13765" style="width: 14px;" src="https://lede-admin.nautil.us/wp-content/uploads/sites/70/sites/3/nautilus/nautilus-favicon-14.png" alt="" referrerpolicy="no-referrer"></p> <p><em>Lead image: Haruka Kondo from Keio University</em></p>
