Rattlesnakes’ own antivenom could protect humans too

A mixture of proteins in snake blood can prevent the death of mice injected with an otherwise lethal dose of venom. Globally, snakebites kill 80,000 to 140,000 people a year and lead to around 400,000 disabilities. Because many people who are bitten live in rural areas, there is insufficient access to antivenom. To find a solution, Sean Carroll at the University of Maryland in College Park and his colleagues decided to look into how snakes protect themselves against their own venom<a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-026-02461-0#ref-CR1" data-track="click" data-action="anchor-link" data-track-label="go to reference" data-track-category="references">1</a>. <section aria-labelledby="Bib1"><div class="c-article-section" id="Bib1-section"><h2 class="c-article-section__title js-section-title" id="Bib1">References</h2><div class="c-article-section__content" id="Bib1-content"><div data-container-section="references"><ol class="c-article-references" data-track-component="outbound reference" data-track-context="references section"><li class="c-article-references__item js-c-reading-companion-references-item" data-counter="1."><p class="c-article-references__text" id="ref-CR1">Carroll, S. Pumas are drivers’ guardian angels

How a steady drip-drip can erode the hardest stone

Engineered yeast that make cancer drugs could spare a rare flower

Modified baker’s yeast can produce a precursor for a drug that is usually derived from an endangered plant and its relatives. Every year, millions of people take the drugs etoposide and teniposide, which are used to treat cancers of the lung, blood and other organs. But the process of manufacturing both drugs is low-yield and complicated. It also relies on precursors from plants in the subfamily Podophylloideae, including the endangered plant <i>Sinopodophyllum hexandrum</i> (also known as<i> Podophyllum hexandrum</i>), which is native to high-altitude Himalayan regions. Now, researchers have detailed a new pathway for making the drugs — with help from baker’s yeast<a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-026-02428-1#ref-CR1" data-track="click" data-action="anchor-link" data-track-label="go to reference" data-track-category="references">1</a>. <section aria-labelledby="Bib1"><div class="c-article-section" id="Bib1-section"><h2 class="c-article-section__title js-section-title" id="Bib1">References</h2><div class="c-article-section__content" id="Bib1-content"><div data-container-section="references"><ol class="c-article-references" data-track-component="outbound reference" data-track-context="references section"><li class="c-article-references__item js-c-reading-companion-references-item" data-counter="1."><p class="c-article-references__text" id="ref-CR1">Shen, S. <i>et al.</i> <i>Science</i> <b>393</b>, aef5438 (2026).</p><p class="c-article-references__links u-hide-print"><a data-track="click_references" rel="nofollow noopener" data-track-label="10.1126/science.aef5438" data-track-item_id="10.1126/science.aef5438" data-track-value="article reference" data-track-action="article reference" href="https://doi.org/10.1126%2Fscience.aef5438" aria-label="Article reference 1" data-doi="10.1126/science.aef5438">Article</a>&nbsp; <a data-track="click_references" rel="nofollow noopener" data-track-label="link" data-track-item_id="link" data-track-value="pubmed reference" data-track-action="pubmed reference" href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&amp;db=PubMed&amp;dopt=Abstract&amp;list_uids=42531388" aria-label="PubMed reference 1">PubMed</a>&nbsp; <a data-track="click_references" data-track-action="google scholar reference" data-track-value="google scholar reference" data-track-label="link" data-track-item_id="link" rel="nofollow noopener" aria-label="Google Scholar reference 1" href="http://scholar.google.com/scholar_lookup?&amp;title=&amp;journal=Science&amp;doi=10.1126%2Fscience.aef5438&amp;volume=393&amp;publication_year=2026&amp;author=Shen%2CS."> Google Scholar</a>&nbsp; </p></li></ol><p class="c-article-references__download u-hide-print"><a data-track="click" data-track-action="download citation references" data-track-label="link" rel="nofollow" href="https://citation-needed.springer.com/v2/references/10.1038/d41586-026-02428-1?format=refman&amp;flavour=references">Download references<svg width="16" height="16" focusable="false" role="img" aria-hidden="true" class="u-icon"><use xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:href="#icon-eds-i-download-medium"></use></svg></a></p></div></div></div></section>

Brains of male and female mice recover differently from ketamine

Specialized immune cells found in the brain, known as microglia, reach out to neurons in female mice that were given a dose of ketamine anaesthetic. The drug ketamine induces unconsciousness, making it useful as an anaesthetic. Now, research<a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-026-02356-0#ref-CR1" data-track="click" data-action="anchor-link" data-track-label="go to reference" data-track-category="references">1</a> in mice shows that recovery from the drug seems to involve microglia, the brain’s resident immune cells, remodelling connections between neurons — but only in female animals. <section aria-labelledby="Bib1"><div class="c-article-section" id="Bib1-section"><h2 class="c-article-section__title js-section-title" id="Bib1">References</h2><div class="c-article-section__content" id="Bib1-content"><div data-container-section="references"><ol class="c-article-references" data-track-component="outbound reference" data-track-context="references section"><li class="c-article-references__item js-c-reading-companion-references-item" data-counter="1."><p class="c-article-references__text" id="ref-CR1">Venturino, A. <i>et al.</i> <i>Sci.
